A New Year Beckons…

Today is the last day of this year, with tomorrow being the start of another.

This can be a difficult time for people for many reasons. The dawn of a new year can bring about excitement and hope for the coming year, or fear, anxiety, pressure and other emotions about what might be coming. For some, the change of the year is a major thing, and for others, it’s just another day, or it’s somewhere in between. I think it’s often our view of ourself and our circumstances that impacts on how we view these two days of the year.

Realistically, it is just another day. For many though, it can be a time to reflect on the year just gone and also look to what’s coming. If that is not something that feels positive for you, then there is no need to do that at all.

If you do want to reflect back, maybe have a think about things you did but didn’t expect to, times where you exceeded your own expectations of yourself, changes you have made in your life, changes you have noticed or discovered within yourself, things you have learnt. Some people like to reflect back and look at the last year as a journey, and maybe see that journey as an image and see which bits were tougher, which were better, what the weather was like on different parts, what the landscape is like, how the path looked and felt to walk, whether the path was up, down or level at different times. It can feel a safer way to look back and acknowledge all you have overcome to get to this point.

If you want to look to the year ahead maybe think about what you want to be different between now and this time next year, what you want to achieve (making sure it is something that is actually realistically possible for you), what you will need to do to achieve that, how you want to be and feel within yourself, what resources you need within yourself to be how you want to be and to achieve what you are aiming to achieve.

Some people like to set ‘New Years Resolutions’, and for some people, this works. Are you someone who does this? If you do, do you stick to it? Do you see the change of the year as a motivating moment to change something you want to change? Do you see a resolution as something you should do? Or something you want to do? Does it actually help you in any way to make a resolution? Or does it actually turn out to be something negative? Or irrelevant?

I personally don’t make them, because I don’t find they are useful for me, and I don’t make good use of them. I do, however, find that if I work towards something I’m motivated for, then I can make that work successfully- at any time of the year. After all, tomorrow is just another day.

As well as giving you those things to think about, I also just want to say that I hope that 2017 holds many exciting times for you all- times where you have to step out of your comfort zone and grow as a result, moments of self discovery, times of peace and calm, experiences that touch you deeply and greater connections with yourself and those around you. As human beings, we are constantly on a personal journey, and I hope that your 2017 journey is all those things and more.
